NOVEL LIVES
School of Continuing Studies, University of Toronto.
(WATCH FOR THIS COURSE IN FALL 2012)
In this course you'll look at the lives of famous novelists--traditional and modern--to see how
the personal intersected with the professional. You'll learn about the struggles writers faced
in reality as well as the dilemmas they created to keep their readers spellbound. By
examining the techniques these writers used to bring their fiction alive, you'll see how a
novel really works.
LOYALIST COLLEGE
SUMMER ARTS PROGRAM
This course will examine the three elements that make up the novelist's life: The
Psychology, The Business, and The Practice. Novelists at all levels will share insights in
daily discussions on such topics as: relating to reality to generate ideas, finding time to
write, dealing with solitude, handling rejection, committing yourself for the long haul.
Lectures on the current state of the publishing business and how to tap into it will be
followed by an intensive daily workshop in which each student will have the opportunity
to present his or her work for critique. Individual one-on-one sessions with the teacher
will enable each student to discuss privately some of the issues, ideas and concerns
raised in the daily discussions and lectures. This course will appeal to published,
pre-published, aspiring and prospective novel writers.
The class will be five weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with one hour for lunch
